We have received reports of suspicious outreach in response to classified ads. We want to take a moment to remind members how our system is designed to protect you, along with steps you can take to avoid potential scams.
How our platform protects you:
- By default, your email address is not publicly displayed in classified listings
- Interested parties must submit inquiries through the platform
- You control whether to include your name or phone number in your listing
These measures help reduce unwanted exposure. However, because ads are publicly accessible, there is still a possibility that bad actors may attempt to make contact.
Additional option for increased privacy:
Members who prefer a more controlled audience may choose to post listings within their district forum, accessible through their online account. These forums are limited to fellow members, which can reduce the likelihood of unwanted outreach. Please note that this option may result in a smaller pool of potential buyers.
What to watch for:
- Requests for additional contact details beyond what is necessary
- Attempts to move communication quickly off-platform
- Messages asking for account access, verification codes, or payment credentials
- Unusual urgency or overly complex payment instructions
Important reminder:
No legitimate transaction should require you to share sensitive information or grant access to your financial accounts. For example, when using Venmo, payments can be completed using a username or in-app request. You should never provide login details or verification codes.
Best practices:
- Be thoughtful about what contact information you share
- Verify the identity of the other party before proceeding
- Use secure and familiar payment methods
- If something feels off, do not continue the interaction
If you receive a suspicious message, please report it so we can review and take appropriate action.
Thank you for your attention to this and for helping maintain a safe and trusted member community.
