The NYSCA is pleased to share a newly released educational resource from NGS Medicare designed to support providers in navigating Advance Beneficiary Notice requirements with greater clarity and confidence.

NGS Medicare has added the Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) Decision Tree to its Part B Tools and Calculators page. This tool is intended to assist providers in determining when it may be appropriate to issue an ABN to a Medicare beneficiary. By walking through key coverage considerations, the decision tree helps promote consistent and compliant use of ABNs in clinical practice.

As a reminder, an ABN is a written notice provided to beneficiaries enrolled in Original Medicare, also known as fee-for-service Medicare, when a provider believes Medicare is not likely to cover a specific item or service. ABNs are not intended for routine use and must be issued only when there is a clear, identifiable reason that payment is expected to be denied. Proper use of ABNs helps ensure beneficiaries are informed in advance and supports compliance with Medicare requirements.

Providers are encouraged to review and utilize the ABN Decision Tree as a practical reference when evaluating coverage expectations and beneficiary notification responsibilities. This tool can be especially helpful in reducing uncertainty and strengthening documentation practices.

For additional details and access to the decision tree, visit the NGS Medicare Part B Tools and Calculators page.
