Reflecting on a challenging legislative session and the work ahead for NYSCA
Now that the 2026 legislative session is over, it’s an opportune time to reflect on the first 6 months of the year.
I have heard from numerous chiropractors across New York who are feeling disappointed. Some NYSCA members in particular are discouraged because we were hopeful that this would be the year New York’s legislature would finally update the chiropractic scope of practice. A bill to do just that advanced through multiple committees in the state Assembly with appreciable momentum, until it encountered strong opposition from the Medical Society in the final hours of session and stalled before it could reach the floor for a vote.
While this was not the outcome we sought, it would be a mistake to measure our accomplishments solely by whether this bill passed this year.
Meaningful change is rarely achieved in a straight line. That is particularly true with policy making, which is sometimes likened to pushing a rope; it isn’t easy. It usually takes years of education, relationship building, perseverance, and plain old hard work to get a bill signed into law.
Although this year's effort fell short of that end, it moved the conversation forward, demonstrated growing support for an updated scope, and provided valuable lessons for the work that lies ahead.
The question some observers are asking is: what now?
The answer is simple.
We keep building.
Advocacy Remains at the Heart of Our Mission
NYSCA's commitment to advocating for and advancing the chiropractic profession will not change.
We will continue working with legislators, regulatory agencies, coalition partners, and chiropractic leaders to advocate for policies that benefit both practitioners and patients. We will evaluate this year's legislative efforts, identify opportunities for improvement, and continue pursuing meaningful advancements for the profession.
Advocacy is often the most visible part of what an association does. It is also only one part.
Building a Stronger Association
Over the past several years, NYSCA has been improving the strength of its infrastructure, creating more efficient and more effective systems across the board.
We have been reviewing and streamlining governing documents, updating policies and procedures, refining our mission and vision, and developing strategic priorities that will guide the association and its leaders.
These efforts may not generate headlines, but they are essential to building an organization that can serve members effectively and respond to the changing needs of the profession long term.
In other words, strong, effective advocacy requires a strong, effective association behind it.
Investing in Member Resources
At the same time, NYSCA has focused on improving and adding new tools and resources designed to support chiropractors in their daily practice.
Recent initiatives have included a new website and member platform, upgrades to communication systems, expanded educational offerings, and the development of the Statusfi by NYSCA compliance dashboard.
These products and services reflect a commitment to delivering practical value to members while ensuring that the association remains equipped to meet future challenges and opportunities.
Modern Tools, Personal Service
As technology continues to evolve, so does the way associations operate.
NYSCA has embraced new technologies that improve efficiency and enhance member services. We use tools, including artificial intelligence, and software that enable us to streamline processes and expand the resources available to members.
At the same time, we believe technology should support relationships, not replace them.
When you contact NYSCA, you connect with real people. Your phone calls, emails, and website inquiries are received and answered by individuals who understand the profession and are committed to helping members navigate the challenges they face.
That commitment to personal service remains one of the association's defining values.
Looking Ahead
The future of chiropractic in New York will not be determined by any single legislative session, any single initiative, or any single challenge.
It will be shaped by the collective efforts of dedicated practitioners, engaged members, volunteer leaders, and a strong professional association working together toward common goals.
While setbacks can be frustrating, they can also serve as a reminder that patience and persistence are essential to progress.
NYSCA remains committed to advocating for the profession, supporting our members, strengthening the organization, and preparing for the opportunities ahead.
We are grateful to every member who continues to be part of that effort; thank you for being a member of the team.
We encourage those who have heretofore only watched us to join us. We need your help too.
I assure you, our work is ongoing. Our commitment is steadfast. And the best is yet to come.
